Description:

_ The 2023 The Frozen Snot:

PLEASE READ THIS IN ITS ENTIRETY BEFORE SIGNING UP!

The Frozen Snot is a 8.3 or 13.5-mile trek, trail run, hike, adventure race, or whatever you want to call it. We consider it more of a "mountain epic", as not much of the course is all that runable. This is NOT a beginner friendly event. The course is very technical, has A LOT of elevation change over very few miles. There are boulder fields, steep descents, and Mother Nature could give us any combination of snow/ice/mud she desires (depending on how sadistic she's feeling.) The day could be freezing rain on top of a foot of snow or it might just be a bracing, bright winter's day out on a hard and fast rocky surface. We have selected the worst that Bald Eagle Mountain provides and scheduled it during what is usually the coldest week of the year. This event is aimed at the hardcore trail runner and hardy hiker. By hardcore we don't mean "elite" or necessarily fast, but rather a person that is ready for the most daunting course we could devise in these parts. A fair amount of the route is on established trails used by the Boulder Beast. Some of the route, though, travels ground that is really only passable (except to the diehard bushwacker) in the winter. The course will be well-marked, but not "manicured." Expect four stream crossings which may, or may not, be frozen. You can choose the regular course (about 13.5 miles) or a "short course" of about 8.3 miles. Choose your own adventure when you register. Historically, one of the (semi) unique things about this event is the ability to either drop down from full to half course or to increase from half to full during the event. In all the years that we have done this, it has been 99.9% the former and not the latter.

VENUE:

This is an OUTDOOR event. The fantastic folks at Restless Oaks Restaurant have agreed to allow us to use their pavilion, which we will weatherize as much as possible. If you are in the area, please stop in, grab some good grub and thank them for their hospitality. Our event would NOT be possible without them. Since this is a completely outdoor event, there will be no showers available to runners.

Please note: if you are going into the restaurant, you MUST order food. It is NOT a place to change clothes, etc. Please change your shoes, muddy clothes, etc. prior to entering the restaurant so as not to leave a muddy/wet mess for Restless Oaks staff. They are being very generous with the use of their facilities. Please be respectful.

PACKET PICKUP:

We will have two options for pick-up:
o 6:00-8:00p Friday night (2/3/23) at Oregon Hill Winery McElhattan
o Starting at 6:00a Saturday morning at the Restless Oaks pavilion

FOOD/REFRESHMENTS:

  • Breakfast items will be served prior to the event.
  • Food and refreshments will be available after the race.
  • We will have a variety of menu options to meet special dietary needs (vegan, vegetarian, keto, paleo, etc.) HOWEVER, all food items are first come, first served.  We cannot guarantee that we will not run out of these items. Runners with special dietary needs are encouraged to bring their own food/snacks just in case.
  • We do our absolute best to ensure that all participants, even the "back-of-the-pack-ers", have a variety of food options available to them at aid stations and at the start/finish. Depending on the course, weather, and a variety of other factors, food items that we end up having way too much of one year could run out the next year, and vice versa. It is nearly impossible to anticipate exactly how much food to purchase, but we try our best and more often than not, we are successful at this.
  • Did we mention we have an aid station devoted entirely to BACON?!

RACE RULES:

  • You are responsible for understanding race rules and expectations before you begin the event. Pre-race announcements with specific details about the course will begin at 7:25a on race day. We will also send a runner's guide via email (and post it on our Facebook page) 7-10 days prior to the event -- please read this, and pay attention to the pre-race announcements on race day.
  • Participants must be over 16 years old unless an exception is issued by the race team. Exceptions may be granted to those under 16 who -- by their trail/race experience -- show that they are capable of completing this course. Any participant under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (i.e. you must run together). Email [email protected] if you would like us to consider your child for an exception.
  • All participants are REQUIRED to have available (wearing or in your pack) some sort of traction device, such as Kahtoola Microspikes, Hillsound Trail Crampons, Yaktrax or "screw shoes" (shoes with short sheet metal screws in the sole to provide traction). ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • Running or hiking in winter conditions on a challenging course requires preparation and planning for your clothing and gear. Trekking poles, no cotton clothing, and an extra pair of socks in your pack are recommended.
  • The race director reserves the right to not let a person start if he feels that an entrant is not suitably equipped or dressed.
  • The course will be very well flagged. Cutting the course in any way is not allowed. If you find that you've gone off trail, you must re-enter the course where you left in order to continue.
  • There are cutoffs on the course. These are not negotiable. Aid station captains and trail marshals also have the authority to pull you from the event if they believe you are physically incapable of continuing. Their decisions are final.
  • If you are miss a cutoff or are unable to complete the course, you must notify an aid station captain and surrender your race bib. There are no exceptions to this rule. Due to the nature of this event, it is imperative that the race team is able to account for each participant. If you leave the event without notifying race personnel, or refuse to surrender your bib, you will be banned from future events.
  • Runners who choose to change distances during the event must notify the race timer of the change as soon as they cross the finish line.
  • Sweepers are not racers’ personal trash-picker-uppers. If you eat/drink along the course, please pack it away in your pocket/bag or carry it to the next aid station and dispose of it. Any participant caught littering on the course will be disqualified.
  • There are no bib transfers, deferrals, or bandits for this event. No exceptions.

REFUND & CANCELLATION POLICY:

Participants who are no longer able to attend the event are eligible to receive a 50% refund until 1/1/23. Participants can request a refund through RunSignUp.

Due to a variety of factors, the race will not be rescheduled to a different date due to inclement weather, hazardous driving conditions, or travel/gathering mandates related to COVID-19.  We reserve the right to cancel the event if we believe that holding the event would pose a significant health and safety risk due to inclement weather.  If the event is cancelled, there will be NO REFUNDS.  If The Frozen Snot is cancelled, entry fees minus any costs we have incurred will be split between the City of Lock Haven Park’s Department fund for watershed improvements for recreation, ReVibe Gear, and Alzheimer's Association.  In the event of a cancellation, swag will be able to picked up for 15 days after February 4th at a location to be designated.  You may pick up swag for friends, but swag will NOT be mailed.

If you’re caught registering a minor with a false birthdate, you and your underage participant will be removed from the race and you will be banned from future events. You will not receive a refund for your registration fees.

WAIT LIST:

Our event is limited to 300 runners. Our event sells out very fast (under 40 minutes in 2022). Once we reach 300 runners, the wait list will open. You will not be charged for adding your name to the wait list. As runners withdraw from the event, those on the wait list will be given an opportunity to register based on their position on the wait list. You will be notified via email if you are selected and have 48 hours to register once the email is sent. You can view your position on the wait list via your profile on RunSignUp. If you are at the top of the waitlist, we recommend that you keep an eye on your inbox. If the invitation is not accepted after 48 hours, it will automatically move on to the next person on the wait list and you will lose your spot.
