Description:

2023 Powerman Michigan Duathlon:

Same great race, beautiful local venue @ Kensington Metropark.  Locals know how beautiful Kensington Metropark is as it gets over 2 million visitors annually to enjoy nature, Kent lake, two great beach’s, a paved trail around the lake, great picnic spots and nature education and hikes.  So we thought being so close to the metro area yet offering so much along with a challenging bike course it would be the perfect new home for Powerman Michigan.

The top three athletes in each aged-up age group will qualify for the 2020 ITU Long-Distance Duathlon World Championship as well as the 2020 ITU World Short Course Championships in Viborg Denmark.

course Info:

If you participated in the first four years of Powerman Michigan this will be the exact opposite.   We will start you off with an all paved run that will take you on the paved trail that circles the lake at the park.  This will be a slightly rolling course with the lake on one side and nature on the other.  The bike course is similarly rolling with the exception of “the hill” of course the first four years there was not even a hiccup on the course.  This is the county’s highest point, once you crest the hill you will sweep back down and around and back to the Martindale beach area.  We used this bike course years ago for a triathlon and athletes loved the challenge.  Then the same run for #2.

Transition

Opens – 6:30am
No friends or family members allowed in the transition area for any reason. The race director and race officials will close the transition area 30-45 minutes before race start to ensure all athletes are at the starting area for mandatory course meeting and announcements. Once the transition area is closed, you will NOT be permitted back in before the race starts. Family/Friends will not be permitted in for any reason at any time throughout the event.

Re-Opens
When the last cyclist is off the course and has headed out for the run. This time is variable and we will make announcements at the event when the transition area is ready to re-open.

Any athletes removing gear from transition areas before the announcer or race director has officially opened the transition area will be DISQUALIFIED from the race! This pertains to all athletes of all distances. All athletes deserve a clear transition.

In the event of inclement weather, it is recommended you have warm, dry clothing outside the transition area to put on following your finish due to other athletes still being on the bike course.

Timing Chip
When you have completed the race, please do NOT enter the transition area wearing your timing chip. PLEASE remove your chip before re-entering the transition area and exiting again. This will cause a timing error.

Racking
You must rack according to your race number, based on the sequence numbers placed at the end of each row. Please remember racks will hold 7 bikes racked with the seat tip on the support bar. Please be courteous to fellow athletes to ensure there is space for 7 bikes on a rack. If there is not enough room for your bike on your designated rack, please see a 3D Team member and we will help. Please do not move another athlete’s bike or gear.

Aid Station
Located at the run in/out chute with water and Gatorade Endurance replacement.

Directional
Run In/Out and Bike In/Out chutes are clearly marked on the large structures at either end.  It is your responsibility to go the right direction while racing in the transition area.

TRANSITION AREA map

Bike

Exiting the transition area at Martindale Beach you will head out into the park on a slightly rolling course.  The course is tree-lined most of the way, after making your way at the parks roundabout you will have a short section before “the climb” it is not earth-shattering but for those that do not practice hills or see hills it will get the heart pounding.  It is the county’s highest point.  After cresting the hill you will sweep down to a left turn and head back to Martindale beach.  It is a 9-mile loop course, so 1, 2 or 4 laps depending on what event you are in.  You will sweep down past transition and out for laps 2 and 3 or head out for the run.

Aid station: Powerman Distance athletes only – you will hit this 4 times on the bike. Water, lemon-lime Gatorade Endurance Formula and energy gels will be available.

Bike Course Cut off time: 12:00pm

Run

The run course will be beautiful with Kent lake on one side the entire time.  You will use the paved trail that circles the lake.  This is slightly rolling on the out and back course.  You will simply head out to your turnaround point and head back.  You will have an opportunity to  see your competition on the way back.

Wave starts will depend on start numbers but initially, it will start as follows:
Classic – 8:00 a.m., Short – 8:30 a.m., Sprint – 8:45 a.m.

Aid stations: Located at every mile with water, lemon-lime Gatorade Endurance Formula,  bananas, and pickles.

The course will be clearly marked with flags and cones.

Run Course Cut off Time: 2:00pm
