The 2023 Steam Train Half Marathon & Relay:
Community Health Resources’ (CHR) annual CHR Steam Train Half Marathon will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023, starting at the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat located in Essex, Connecticut. It is the only half marathon in the U.S. that races against a steam train and attracts runners from all over the country. Proceeds from the event will benefit Community Health Resources (CHR), Connecticut’s most comprehensive behavioral healthcare agency, and three local nonprofits: the Deep River Fire Department, Essex Public Library, and The Nest/A Little Compassion Inc. This event is a fun-filled family event that everyone can have the opportunity to participate in.

The Steam Train Half Marathon and 2-person relay is the only road race in the country where runners try to outrun a century old Steam Train. Here is a link to the route in MapMyRun: https://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/1670572736 For those participating in the Relay portion of the event: The first runner will start at the Essex Steam Train while their partner rides the Train to the Deep River Landing. Upon arriving at the Landing, the relay partners will switch places; the first runner will ride back to the station on the train, while their partner finishes the second leg of the race, ending a the finish line back at the Essex Steam Train.
